An ordinary chessboard is an 8 X 8 board consisting of 64 small squares, each of side length 1 unit. There are also many other squares of different side lengths within it.

**1.**Calculate the total number of squares within a 2 X 2 board.

**2.**Calculate the total number of squares within a 3 X 3 board.

**3.**Look at 4 X 4 and 5 X 5 boards and find a pattern to help you predict the total number of squares in an ordinary chessboard.
